As far as I know, puzzle games seems to be the de facto force behind the android games. Here, Jewels is yet another addition to this increasingly satisfying list of my games. For anyone who has played the phenomenon known as bejewled this game will be quite familiar to them. Jewels follows the same basic premise of matching three of the same ‘jewels’, to get the highest score. However it doesn’t quite offer the same level of complexity as bejeweled, as does not have different jewels with different capabilities.
The graphics and presentation of the game are to a high degree. The menu is clear and concise, with an inbuilt option to continue your last game. This is a nice touch, considering the inclusion of an infinite mode. The game is pin-sharp with the jewels all nicely coloured and contrasting with each other. The background is also well done, a bright background which never distracts from the actual game, even when it changes after the bonus meter is reached. It gives the game a nice flow.
The controls are done through the touchscreen and it feels very intuitive, and is a very capable substitute for the mouse. I would wager that many people may even prefer to use the touchscreen rather than the mouse. However it does not always react first time to after you select a jewel but those are few and far between.
With the option of three different modes the game does have a decent amount of longevity, but as these modes are not changing the core gameplay, it does mean that when you bored of the game you will switch games rather modes. That’s not to say the core gameplay is not good, it’s great, but greatness can tire.
AndroGamez Score – 7
Price: Free
Overall this is a game worth downloading considering its addictive nature and price (free!) and with the options of global and local leaderboards. This is a game that will keep you enticed for a little while, but just don’t expect an all time classic. Good not great.
